This is a 3rd party rpm repository. The original focus laid upon software used in natural sciences, especially in the field of high energy physics, e.g. tools for numerical programming or such for scientific publications. But since then this repository has included many non-scientific software titles, like system tools or multimedia packages, resulting in a far more generic repository. Part of the 5 repository mega-merge. I have obtained packages such as nessus from this repository.

Yum is an automatic updater and package installer/remover for rpm systems. It automatically computes dependencies and figures out what things should occur to install packages. It makes it easier to maintain groups of machines without having to manually update each one using rpm.
